On Thursday 4th March we celebrated World Book Day in a very different way to normal but nevertheless we still had a brilliant day. It will definitely be a day to remember when the children are older – dressing up as their favourite book characters and completing fun activities via online learning. The book we focused on was one of our 50 reads called ‘The Bear and the Piano’. The children thoroughly enjoyed the book and completed some activities about the book. We designed a poster to advertise the bear’s performance and we wrote a postcard from the bear in New York to his friends in the forest. In the afternoon the children designed a cover for one of the bear’s records and created a picture showing the bear playing the piano across all four seasons.
The children were also very lucky to take part in an online live event with the illustrator Nicola Slater who taught them how to draw the fox and the bird from the book ‘The Leaf Thief’. They drew some fabulous illustrations and thoroughly enjoyed the session. Nicola also spoke to them about how she became an illustrator because she was interested in art and drawing when she was younger. She told them some of her best ideas come from her doodling.
We ended the online learning with a class swap and each class had a different teacher share a book with them and complete some activities based on that book. This was really successful and both the children and the teachers enjoyed the class swap. This is something we will plan to do regularly in the future.
Thank you for supporting World Book Day at home and for making it a thoroughly enjoyable day for the children.
