Reading

At Grange, we are passionate about fostering a love of reading in every child. To support this, we follow the process below:

  • Phonics Books: In EYFS and KS1 pupils take home a phonics book matched to their current Little Wandle level. These are changed weekly.

  • School Library Visits: All children visit the school library each week to choose a book for pleasure, using the IPICK process to help them select the right book. Children can change these on a weekly basis or they may keep a book for long dependent on its length.

  • Home Reading: We encourage children to read at home at least four times a week and record this in their reading record.

  • Soaring Readers Programme: To celebrate commitment to reading, children earn certificates and rewards when they reach 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 reads.

Thank you for supporting your child’s reading journey—together, we can help them soar! â€‹

EYFS Phonics

Each week, your child will bring home an information page outlining what we have been learning in phonics and ways you can support them at home. Thank you for working with us to support your child’s phonics journey!

Spelling

From Year 2 onwards, children move beyond memorising individual words and begin learning spelling patterns and rules. This approach helps them develop a deeper understanding of how words are constructed.

To support this, all children in Year 2 and above have access to Spelling Shed, an engaging online platform that makes spelling practice fun and effective. Spelling Shed is part of EdShed, which provides a range of educational games for spelling spelling practice. You can find out more and explore the platform at: EdShed Web Game - Spelling Shed and MathShed

Maths

In EYFS and KS1, children have access to NumBots. The game is designed to help pupils to use efficient mental calculation strategies to add and subtract one and two-digit numbers, so that they can leave counting on their fingers behind! NumBots is a progressive game where children work through a storyline earning coins and parts of a robot as they enhance their mathematical understanding. We advise children to play for three minutes, four or five times a week to build up their mathematical skills. You can explore the platform here: NumBots | Schools

To help children master their times tables, in the Summer Term of Year 2 pupils have access to Times Tables Rockstars, a fun and interactive online platform that turns learning into a game! Regular practice with Times Tables Rockstars helps build speed and confidence with multiplication facts, which are essential for success in maths. We advise children to play for three minutes, four or five times a week to build up their mathematical skills. You can explore the platform here: Home - Times Tables Rock Stars

We encourage children to log in at home and keep practising—every little bit makes a big difference!
